QUALIFYING  FOR SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY
The Social Security Administration defines disability as having   medical problems that
are physical or emotional illnesses  or injuries that are expected to prevent you from
working  for at least 12 consecutive months.
SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY PROGRAMS
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) If you have a recent work history.
Usually a person must have worked 5 out of the last  10 years to be qualified
and suffer from a medical problem that prevents work. Less work is
required if you are under 31 years of age when your disability began.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) If you have limited income and assets in the
household, and you have either no work history, limited work history or limited
earnings from working, and you have  a medical problem that prevents work.
Disabled children under 18 may also qualify for this program.
Social Security Disability Widow/er Benefits If you are a widow or widower
between the ages of 50 and 60 who was married at least 10 years to the deceased
spouse insured by Social Security at the time of death. The medical problem of the
widow or widower  must be severe enough to prevent work ability within 7 years of
the death of the spouse.
Social Security Disability Adult Child Benefits (DAC)If you are a child  of a
parent already receiving Social Security Disability Benefits (SSDI) or Social Security
Retirement Benefits or deceased  parent who was insured for benefits. The child
must be at  least 19 years old and be disabled by a medical problem that  began
before the age of 22.
